How often have you heard this?

It’s the phrase that echoes through design reviews, strategy sessions, and product workshops. We repeat it like a sacred rule, as if simplicity automatically guarantees good design.

But here’s the problem: simple isn’t always better.

When we obsess over simplicity, we often strip away the richness, depth, and humanity of an experience. Complexity — when designed with care — can be just as valuable, sometimes even more powerful, than simplicity.


The Myth of Absolute Simplicity

The idea that “simpler is always better” didn’t appear out of nowhere. Its roots stretch back to modernist design movements of the 20th century — Bauhaus, Dieter Rams, the minimalist aesthetic. Then Silicon Valley supercharged it, making speed, frictionless onboarding, and “clean” interfaces the holy grail of product design.

For decades, designers have been trained to reduce friction, remove steps, and hide complexity. On paper, it sounds perfect: the fewer the choices, the smoother the flow, the happier the user.

But here’s the paradox: taken too far, this philosophy can create experiences that feel sterile and lifeless.

Think about it:

  • When an app hides crucial settings under endless layers of “advanced options,” users feel like the product doesn’t trust them with control.
  • When a tool oversimplifies a complex task — like video editing or scientific analysis — it risks insulting the user’s intelligence.
  • When a product reduces everything to one big shiny button, the experience might be “easy,” but it often feels patronizing.
  • Or take the Tesla interface, where almost every car control is moved into a touchscreen. It looks clean, futuristic — even revolutionary. But in practice, drivers are forced to navigate menus for basic actions like adjusting wipers or climate. Compare that to physical buttons: once you’ve learned their position, you can operate them by muscle memory, without ever taking your eyes off the road. Here, “simplicity” in appearance actually adds cognitive load and reduces safety.

In these cases, simplicity isn’t liberating — it’s limiting. Users can’t find what they need, they can’t customize their experience, and they lose confidence in the product.

The dirty secret is that simplicity isn’t automatically usable. In fact, oversimplification often does the opposite: it disorients. Instead of helping people, it strips away the affordances and cues that guide them. The result? Users feel lost, frustrated, and powerless — trapped in an interface that was supposed to “just work.”

True usability isn’t about hiding complexity. It’s about exposing it in a way that feels approachable, learnable, and trustworthy.


Complexity as Beauty

If simplicity can sometimes strip away meaning, complexity — when designed with intention — can create beauty. It’s the difference between something that feels disposable and something that feels alive.

Consider these examples:

  • Music: A symphony layered with strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion carries you through tension, release, and resolution. It’s complex by nature, and that complexity is what makes it timeless. Compare it to a two-minute advertising jingle: catchy, yes, but gone as quickly as it came.
  • Cities: Walking through a medieval town square is an exercise in sensory richness — uneven streets, unexpected alleys, centuries of overlapping architecture. It’s not simple, it’s messy. Yet that messiness is what makes it magnetic. Contrast that with a sterile, grid-planned boulevard where everything looks the same. One is an experience; the other is just infrastructure.
  • Games: Why do players spend hundreds of hours in Civilization or Elden Ring? Because their systems are layered, challenging, and full of discovery. A “simpler” game might be easier to learn, but it rarely leaves the same emotional imprint. Complexity gives players ownership of their journey.

And then there’s technology:

  • Creative tools: Photoshop, Figma, or Ableton Live are famously complex. They overwhelm beginners, yes, but they also empower professionals to create at levels that a “simpler” app could never reach. Their richness is not a flaw — it’s the very reason they endure.

Complexity is beautiful because it offers depth. It gives us the chance to explore, to get lost, and to master something over time. There’s a quiet joy in learning a system, in discovering hidden layers, in feeling that the product grows with you.

Simplicity often prioritizes first use. Complexity, when done right, rewards long-term use.


UX Is Not Just About Simplification

There’s a common misconception in design: that our main job is to make things as simple as possible. But UX isn’t about subtraction — it’s about orchestration. Some domains are inherently complex, and trying to flatten them into a “simple” version often strips away the very value users need.

Think of healthcare systems. A patient portal that only shows you your next appointment might feel “clean,” but if you can’t access your full medical history or lab results, the experience is incomplete. Or consider financial apps: giving users a single number — “your balance” — may look simple, but real financial literacy requires layers of detail: transactions, categories, future projections. Without that, users can’t make informed decisions.

Airline check-in is another example. Yes, you want the process to feel smooth, but travel is messy by nature: baggage rules, seat choices, meal preferences, visas. An interface that oversimplifies risks creating frustration at the airport when reality catches up. The complexity doesn’t disappear just because the screen hides it — it only becomes harder to deal with.

Good UX doesn’t deny complexity; it guides you through it. It’s like walking into a library: thousands of books, overwhelming at first glance. But with clear sections, catalogs, and signage, the scale becomes navigable. You’re not spared from the complexity — the books are still there — but you’re given tools to find meaning within it.

So the true craft of UX is not simplification for its own sake. It’s the ability to stage complexity: showing the right amount at the right moment, giving confidence to beginners without holding back experts, and letting the product grow with the user. That balance is what makes an experience feel not just easy, but truly empowering.


“Keep it simple” is good advice — sometimes. But when treated like a universal truth, it blinds us to the value of depth. Complexity is not the enemy of usability; it’s often the very thing that makes a product worth using.

The best designs don’t erase complexity — they curate it. They give us confidence to explore, tools to grow, and the freedom to master something over time.

So maybe the real mantra shouldn’t be “Keep it simple.”
Maybe it should be: “Make it meaningful.”
